Exploring the IT-HR Relationship

Abstract

Is there anything especially problematic in IT’s relationship with HR? This is sometimes cited as a reason for a lack of soft leadership capabilities in some IT executive teams (relationship building, persuasiveness, emotional intelligence). But more informed opinion doubts this; all functions have to find the way to get effective HR support, sometimes battling for the scarce development resources they need in the face of internal competition. If IT has traditionally squandered its share of people development resources on training for the latest wave of technology is this is their own fault?

CIODEVELOPMENT teamed up with Penna, the human capital management consultancy, to investigate what CIOs and HR Directors feel about their functional relationship, what they believe is working well and less well. We invited leading CIOs and HR Directors to give us their views and we found out out how each side experienced and interpreted the problem.
