Expanding the CIO Mandate
Abstract
Why are some CIOs given licence to operate as key members of the executive committee while others struggle to get their voices heard? Why do some sit at the right-hand of the CEO while others get decisions handed down to them for implementation? Is it based upon personal merit, being in the right place at the right time, or are their other decisive factors?
This new project will extend our CIO Role-Types thinking through exploration of the current mandate of leading CIOs of each type assessing their potential for increasing their business and strategic contribution. Even the biggest and best didn’t start out that way. Something happened to give them the breakthrough. At the heart of our enquiry we’ll be searching for the difference that made the difference.
The work will take account of CEO expectations and identify the conditions necessary for a CIO to realise more of the role’s potential for value contribution. It will provide answers to the CIO question: “I feel I can contribute more to this business: what do I have to do to convince my colleagues of this?”
