Building Effective IT Executive Teams

Abstract

This report helps CIOs to understand what type of CIO they are, how they are seen by their colleagues and suppliers, and what teams they must build to create the function their business needs over the coming five years. The research is based on data collected from very large organizations operating in global markets and on personal interviews with 30 leading CIOs operating in Europe and the USA.

CIOs are not all the same. They have different career tracks, come from different disciplines, and offer distinctly different experience and skill sets. The consequence of this is that they create value in different ways that are not always well understood and that are not always well matched to the challenges they face. Central to all of this is the CIO’s core team. CIOs need to surround themselves with a team that can capitalize on their personal career strengths and experience, and that compensates for their weaknesses. Together, these teams need to create the capabilities and responses their organizations require.
